There are three Divisions in DanceSport. Recreational (for the total beginner), Amateur (competitor dancer) & Professional (teacher, adjudicator who can also compete).  Each has it's own grades or levels for elevating.  DSA's elevation system allows competitors to move from one grade to the next by earning elevation points within your grade. To earn points, you need to win an event at a competition and the number of points earned varies according to the event status at the time.

Newcomers can commence at the "Recreational Division" and compete in their normal clothes. There are three levels within the Recreational Division. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, and competitors may advance through or beyond the Recreational Division at any time as their skill level permits or, if they choose, stay in each level for one year before progressing to the next.

Once you have completed the Recreational Division you can then move onto the Amateur Division, where you can wear a competition costume. The Amateur Division starts in "C Grade", then "B Grade" and "A Grade" or "Open". Progression is by winning five elevation points in a particular style, of which there are three, Ballroom, Latin & New Vogue. Competitors may compete in different grades for different styles and may stay in a grade as long as it takes to win elevation points or may choose to "self elevate" to a highter grade at any time.

After the Amateur Division, most successful couples move to the Professional Division, to teach and compete and sometimes further their studies to adjudicate.

To move upward through the Grades and Levels of DanceSport you have to earn elevations or points. In total to elevate one grade or level up you need to have 5 points. You earn these points by winning an event. If there are 4 or more couples in your event you must accept the elevation. If there are less than 4, then you can ask to still go up but, you must decide immediately following the announcement on the day, and inform the DSWA Registrar or competition organiser of your decision.

Elevation marks are recorded only in the competitors current grade or level, until the maximum number of marks are awarded in that grade or level, at which time the competitor is requred to elevate to the next grade or level. There is no carry over of marks to a higher grade or level.

Below are the amount of points each event carries:

National Championship 3 points per win.

Championship 2 points per win

Competition 1 point per win

Unrestricted Competition This competition carries no elevations. So if you win an event you will not receive any elevation points. This particular event is advisable before a National Championship as dancers can practice their dancing before a major event without having to worry about elevating to a higher grade just before a National event.
